Movie Review: Ang Babae Sa Septic Tank
Yes, the humor here was dead on. I've seen a couple of good Filipino comedies recently and they were pretty funny, but this one was quite hysterical. There were some sequences that on paper would've seemed corny, but everything just worked. It was also kind of refreshing to see an indie film poke fun of indie films in general and I appreciated the fact that it was well aware of that.
Humor, however, was all there was. The lack of a solid storyline was my main gripe with the film. I mean, comedies, at least to me, don't have to have a great story because the main goal is just to make me laugh hard. But while Ang Babae Sa Septic Tank achieved that effortlessly, I somehow expected a little more than what the film offered in terms of the narrative. There were SO many long scenes that seem to be thrown in just so Eugene Domingo can score another laugh, yet it didn't progress the story one bit.
Surprisingly though, this flaw was easy enough to gloss over, thanks to the great cast. Everyone gave solid performances and it, arguably, enhanced everything and made the film better than it actually was. JM De Guzman and Kean Cipriano were both good considering the limited one-dimensional characters they were given. Cai Cortez didn't even speak any line, but she managed to make her presence felt.
Eugene Domingo, as usual, was still brilliant as Mila and as herself. True, I've seen this kind of acting from her before, but her role on this film had a great deal of versatility that was admirable. I believe that this was a great acting triumph for Domingo.
From a purely objective standpoint, Ang Babae Sa Septic Tank can't be considered one of the greatest films EVER made. It's not epic. It's not revolutionary. It's not groundbreaking. However, the film, on it's own, was a one great piece of entertainment and yes, a movie funny to everyone, regardless of gender, age, social status or maturity.
