Music Release: Selena Gomez - Bad Liar "is willing to go away from radio status quo."
It would be a stretch to say that Selena Gomez was ambitious enough to take a big leap for her new single, Bad Liar because she wasn't. What is admirable though with the young pop singer is that she didn't rest on her laurel but opts to fancy her way to an almost different sound.
Bad Liar, at some point, could be mistakenly as Hands to Myself 2.0, but that is not where the single has taken off actually. It features a hook on chorus that is infectious enough backed by that whispery quality of tone from Selena that she mastered beautifully. The pre-chorus could've worked better for that crescendo, but then that is just me nitpicking.
The single features also an interpolation of Talking Heads' Psycho Killer that if you are not familiar with, it could get away with it.
In a bold effort, Selena Gomez's Bad Liar is both a hit and mix. It successfully gives Selena a different flavor and a risk that is worth noting for. At the same time, the single isn't really that revolutionary to be super lauded for.
At the end of the day, Bad Liar cements Selena Gomez as a valuable pop artist that is willing to go away from the now status quo of radio hits without really going against it but celebrating likeness in difference. Bad Liar has enough hook and an inviting pleasurable beat that is accessible.
