Music Release: Liam Payne (ft. Quavo) - Strip that Down "is not bad but lacks punch."
Finally! The last and final member of One Direction has released his single and it is receiving mixed reviews.
Let's break it down first. So, Zayn went the R&B route, while Niall took the singer-song writer, folk lane. Louis collaborated to take the electro-pop genre and Harry went bold and paid homage to some classic Rock 'n' Roll. None of them actually went all the way pop which is their boyband identity. Liam Payne, the man of the moment, went the risky yet familiar as he released a single on the pop genre with the assistance of Quavo.
Strip that Down, to be fair, isn't cringe worthy but it is not also out of the box. It follows the formula of a radio-ready pop single. Beautiful voice, a little rap verse to add dynamics and then a beat that is infectious. Liam has been smart on that department, giving us a Justin Timberlake or Justin Bieber vibe. A safe route that will ensure him spins from Pop, HAC and Rhythmic radio.
The problem with the single arises on the fact that Liam failed to show a memorable identity. It is a common tune that we have heard before and despite a commendable confidence and reliable vocals, Liam fades in comparison to his contemporaries which is a shame because that has been his role in One Direction before - the reliable singer but fades in the background.
Strip that Down is not bad at all, if not one of the better post 1D single, but it lacks punch and color.
