Movie Review: Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps

Investopedia anyone? Haha.

To be honest, I have not seen the original Wall Street and although I know a little about the stock market itself, I was still wondering how this movie would actually measure up.

Now, it's true that a good portion of the film spewed a massive amount of stock market jargon that only a handful of people would understand, but I somehow figured that there was something more to the film than that. Ok. I'm not going into any details about the movie itself, but I must say that the film's high points were - to an extent - powerful and had a surprising touch of heart. Ha!

That said, I really think that the first half of the film came off as slightly convoluted and overly complicated - particularly in execution. Yes, the plot and storyline were solid but my biggest problem with the film was its structure. It felt, to me, that it tried too much too fast. I mean, it was seriously loaded with too many subplots that - as a whole - made it a bit of a mess. Oh, and the ending  just didn't feel right to me. I don't know.

I also thought that the editing went too far as well, especially for a movie aimed at adults. Really. Was it necessary to throw in animations during a simple explanation of a particular machinery? Too many liberties, I think.

Good thing, this film was full of solid performances from the entire cast. Shia LeBeouf, I thought, delivered quite impressively in this movie and could possibly be the best performance of his career so far. He was subdued rather than the usual smart a*s young adult he plays. Of course, Michael Douglas was brilliant and so was Josh Brolin. Carey Mulligan's character, on the other hand, wasn't as fleshed out as I'd hope but she was still pretty good.

Ironically, just like the real stock market, this is a film that spikes at some occasional highs and lows. Haha. It wasn't the best I've seen this year, but it was relatively good - relatively being the operative word here. Ha! Not something I'd recommend to everyone though.
