American Idol 15: Auditions Part 1

I. AM. NOT. READY.

Today is the beginning of the end, and watching this episode was incredibly bittersweet. Quite frankly, I initially figured that it's about time to put American Idol to rest while the legacy of the show is still (sort of) strong, but this made me realize that I'm still in utter denial that my beloved reality competition show will end this year.

Good thing, the episode felt joyous and the pacing was on point with some awesomely placed nostalgic moments. It was really nice to see Kris Allen, Lee DeWyze, Taylor Hicks, Ruben Studdard, and Clay Aiken taking a part of the audition process and those short clips scattered throughout the show was a nice touch.

As for the judges, they were mostly fine and coherent, but Harry Connick Jr, this early, completely annoyed the hell out of me. Why can't he just shut up and just listen. His antics ranged from hysterical to downright stupid silly. I will not let him ruin the moment though.

Not going to take things for granted this season as I cherish this final chapter of American Idol.

Here we go folks, for the last time EVER.

Michelle Marie
Blue
Not going to lie, I wasn't expecting that voice to come out of her. The technique, though slightly flawed, was pretty impressive, and her tone sounded more mature than her actual age. That said, I don't think she's ready and tough enough for this kind of competition - especially since this is the last one. 5

Josiah Siska
Ghost Riders
He's not really my thing, but this was a very strong and confident audition for Josiah despite the sparse dynamics of his delivery. I can genuinely see massive potential with this young guy. He's no Scotty McCreery in terms of charisma, but he can work on that. Sort of. 6

Lindita
It's A Man's Man's Man's World
Her vocals was big, loud, and powerful, but the last part was a little too overwrought for my liking. So instead of staying within the melody of the song, that part sounded forced and self indulgent. 6

Lee Jean
I See Fire
I don't understand why the judges put him trough to Hollywood. Seriously. His tempo was off, he's not entirely charismatic, his pitch was awful, and that arrangement was terrible. 2

Jeneve Mitchell
Chainsaw
There's a quality to Jeneve's vocals that were quite unique. Her phrasing choices were interesting, the innate musicality was impressive, and the song choice matched her perfectly. One of my favorite auditions this season so far. 8

Sonika Vaid
Look At Me
Stunning. While I'm a little worried that the next few Hollywood rounds will chew her up and spit her out, Sonika's crystal clear rendition of Carrie Underwood's Look At Me showed an incrediblt degree of control, gorgeous tone, and emotional deft. 9

Reana Molinaro
Leavin' On Your Mind
It does not bode well when Harry Connick Jr.'s outstandingly annoying mockery of himself overshadowed her actual audition. Yikes. 4

Shevonne Philidor
Latch
Lovely tone, stellar phrasing, forgettable. 6

Kory Wheeler
Bennie and the Jets
I enjoyed him last season - and was a bit bummed that he was cut during Hollywood Week - and this made me remember why I liked him in the first place. He has a beautiful cry in his voice and an interesting tone that makes him stand out. I'd say, if he makes it into the voting rounds, he'd probably finish, at the very least, Top 5. 8.5

Laurel Wright
Follow Your Arrow
She’s got the ability to sing, but I'm not going to remember her voice when I turn off the television and go to bed. 5

Joshua Wicker
Stay
He sang with very nice control, incredible tone, and an admirable awareness of pitch. There were a couple of forced affectations throughout the audition, but he has a decent amount of natural ability. 7.5

Jordan Sasser
It's All Coming Back To Me Now
His voice was solid, but don't take the song to places it doesn't want to go. Keep it simple. 5

Kerry Courtney
Black Sun
Other than the awesome song choice, there's a supreme confidence to him and he seemed like someone who's totally at ease with his capabilities. He came off as a little too dark though for this type of television show, but I digress. 7.5

Shelbie Z
Last Name
To me, I enjoyed Shelby Z's run on The Voice a couple of seasons back, and her take on Last Name was just as spot on as I remembered. The clarity of her voice and energy was admirable, and she got that personality in spades. There's just something about her that makes me smile. 7.5

Kanye West
Gold Digger
Ugh. How I wish they didn't advertise his appearance on the show - or even stream the whole thing prior to the premier for everyone to watch - as this actually felt a tad anti-climatic. Missed opprotunity. N/A
