Music Release: Camila Cabello - OMG/Havana "draw mixed reactions."

Camila Cabello (ft. Quavo), OMG

There is something lazy about the end product of Camila's late Summer double features release -- OMG. The single, which features Migos' Quavo, is co-written by Charli XCX. OMG is a slow-urban jam that isn't anything new. The single suffers with its generic formula and a lazy effort to produce a more punch centered single. The lyrics are predictable and nothing special. The production is meh. Quavo's verse feels disconnected. While OMG is performing better in charts out of the two, it misses a sparkle that could elevate it to a better single.

Camila Cabello (ft. Young Thug), Havana

Havana speaks a different story. It is miles better than OMG, Crying in the Club and I Have Questions combined. There is something refreshingly special with the track. Sure, it is not something spectacularly new but it kind of represents an authentic and more organic side of Camila. The rhythm is catchy. The production is light and the track in its total suits well on Camila's tone. Havana feels like an ode to Camila's roots and it works. Young Thug as the feature here may seem like he took a backseat since it is not as grand as what Quavo did in OMG but it still works with the laid back quality of the song. All in all, Havana creates a more controlled Camila in terms of performance and quality and if her up and coming album is something like this, then she could easily separate herself away from the Camila of Fifth Harmony that people got used to.

Camila has performed below expectations especially when people has pegged her as someone who will find success if she goes solo out of the members of her group. With high profile friends and competitive team that works behind her, Camila is expected to be big and so far her showings are not as impressive as what music pundits have predicted. With OMG & Havana being released as her late Summer double features, the team of Camila is obviously readying her to move forward in full force of her album September release. OMG, Havana draw mixed reactions with the latter being the better single. Often criticized with her baby-like nasal quality of tone, the question now is the public ready to listen to a full album of Camila as solo artist or Simon and the X Factor judges were right in putting her in a group because that's where she can excels.
