Music Release: Sam Smith - Pray "sounds like a crossover of Pop and Gospel."

In line with his announcement of his sophomore album title and release date, Sam Smith dropped a new single entitled Pray and it sounds like a crossover of pop and Gospel. Somehow at some point it did work though and this is yet another solid single from the British crooner.

Pray is a booming ballad that builds up over its piano-strings-percussion themed production. The single relies mostly on Sam Smith's gorgeous vocals and how he powered over the tambourine like infectious instruments. The strings kick in and some bombastic production are also present throughout the single. While the single explores yet another Gospel-like theme, it does translate well to the pop listeners.

Pray may not be as memorable as its predecessor and the single seems to rest on a one note dynamic despite some impressive vocal chops, it is still a beautiful tune and the crescendo is quite its most beautiful moment. A bit anti-climactic, but still works.
