Movie Review: Coco

If only there were enough superlatives in the English language with which I can laud Coco, I'd probably write all of it as this was quite simply the best animated film I've seen this year - though I haven't seen a lot, but you know what I mean. Haha. Yes, the narrative was basic and extremely familiar, but the film somehow managed to elevate it by the writing and direction. It had strong emotional depth - the last 10 minutes in particular had almost the entire theatre bawling - and a heartfelt universal theme despite having Mexico's culture at the center of it all. The visuals were outstanding, the animation was strikingly vibrant, and the overall look was snappy and energetic. Oh, and some of the song were terrific! The film slightly struggled though on holding its ground with its tonal structure, but I digress. Coco radiated so much life and charm that it was quite impossible to resist. An absolute joy to watch.
