Movie Review: Ang Dalawang Mrs. Reyes

Ang Dalawang Mrs. Reyes was a completely engrossing film with interesting insights to tell and humor thrown in where it was needed. Yes, the overall execution was flawed as the narrative felt slightly disjointed and, at times, choppy but the film had a sense of honesty and a realistic charm.

The writing was witty, detailed, and attentive and it exposed some revealing raw human emotions in our complex and contemporary lives, the humor was mostly spot on, and the two glorious stars were just, well, glorious. Judy Ann Santos' ability to move from one emotion to another seamlessly, combined with Angelica Panagniban's terrific comedic timing created a good chemistry between them. True, the latter could've been given a better material to work with, but I thought she delivered in spades with spunk and funny nerve. The supporting characters - JC De Vera and Joross Gamboa - were quite problematic though. There was an awkwardness to their portrayal that occasionally pulled me out of the story. Joross fared a little better as JC De Vera's portrayal was just downright contrived.

Again, Ang Dalawang Mrs. Reyes wasn't perfect, but it made some very real, critical, and timely social commentary with enough levity to not come across as too preachy. Oh, and did I say it was funny?
