Movie Review: Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again

The sequel (and prequel) nobody needed. Sure, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again had a couple of big numbers that were fun, infectious and irresistible and Lily James was unexpectedly fantastic as the young Donna, but everything else felt emptier than the original. The storyline was wafer-thin with no meaningful stakes, the production value looked both gaudy and chintzy all at the same time, some of the performances were choreographed and shot awkwardly, and the intimate numbers were hard to watch. Oh, and the young counterparts of Brosnan, Skarsgård, and Firth were downright embarrassing. Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again sure had some redeeming qualities, but I can't reconcile the fact that while I had low expectations coming in, yet I was still very much disappointed. If you'll watch this to see Meryl Streep alone, you'd probably feel cheated.
