Year-End List 2017: 20 Best Movies

Times that are spirit-crushingly awful desperately need great and entertaining films, and 2017, at the very least, delivered some impressive movies from your usual summer blockbuster sequels, to adorable animated films, to new and refreshing narratives. While not the best, it's been a good year for films.

As always, the usual caveats apply: I’m willing to concede that these may all simply be movies that happened to land in front of my eyeballs on the day I needed them to. So yes, I wasn’t able to see every movie this year, so absence from the list may suggest one I missed.

Also, the particular order of the list changed several times over the course of its writing, and will doubtless continue changing in my head long after publication. Let's get to it.

Read on to see what made the shortlists and let us know in the comments what made yours.

20. Okja
.. while it's a predictable fluff, it's a thought-provoking one.

19. Bliss
.. could be ultimately polarizing, but one can't deny that this was a good and extremely gripping psychological thriller. Anyone who says otherwise is wrong.

18. Kong: Skull Island
.. wasn't perfect by any stretch of the imagination - some of it didn't even make sense - but it was an effective and quite impressive summer blockbuster.

17. Happy Death Day
No gratuitous gore. No unnecessary sex. Just pure slasher flick fun.

16. The Big Sick
.. quite a liberating and touching, feel-good piece that turned what could've been another unremarkable love story into something interesting.

15. Kita Kita
.. a thoroughly delightful romantic comedy film that somehow avoided most of the genre's cliches without ever coming off as a smug or cynical exercise in style.
FULL REVIEW HERE.

14. Star Wars: The Last Jedi
.. wasn't perfect, but as a non-Star Wars fan, this was easily one of the best films I've seen this year. The visuals alone had me applauding and then there's the equally compelling narrative.

13. Get Out
.. an immaculately solid, slow-burning, and well-crafted horror film.

12. Spiderman: Homecoming
.. just as good as some of the previous Spider-Man films, but with a different take and still retained the essentials that made its predecessors a standout.

11. Logan Lucky
.. a delightfully terrific heist film that gave me a chance to root for the 'bad' guys and felt wickedly good about it. Haha.

10. Mother!
.. it's a glorious f*cking mess and I loved it.

09. It
.. a no holds barred, roller coaster ride that was even darker and creepier than I anticipated, but equally emotional, complex, and shockingly funny and adorable.

08. Love You To The Stars And Back
It felt real. It felt authentic. It made me walk away feeling like I've just watched a highly personal story, and not a work of fiction.

07. Logan
.. an emotionally-charged conclusion and a stunning send-off for Hugh Jackman.

06. Thor: Ragnarok
a fun worthwhile romp that squarely pointed out from the get go that it doesn't take itself too seriously. Absolutely fan-THOR-stic! Ha.

05. Coco
If only there were enough superlatives in the English language with which I can laud Coco, I'd probably write all of it as this was quite simply the best animated film I've seen this year.

04. Wonder Woman
.. not only an exceptionally well-made superhero film, but an exceptionally well-made film, period. Oh, and did I mention, GAL. FREAKIN'. GADOT!

03. Bad Genius
a well-crafted piece of entertainment from Thailand that I didn't think I needed. It was dark, suspenseful, funny, and sophisticated, and may or may not be one of the best "teen" movies ever made.
FULL REVIEW HERE.

02. Baby Driver
.. a smart, breezy crime/heist movie that glided along on wit and cool, funky energy that was delightfully refreshing to watch.
FULL REVIEW HERE.

01. Dunkirk
.. the masterful direction and brilliant execution made this one of the most immersive 'war' films I've seen in recent memory.
